ASHA’s Academic Affairs Board, in collaboration with SIG 10 (Issues in Higher Education), SIG 11 (Administration and Supervision), and SIG 14 (Cultural and Linguistic Diversity), developed this collection to support a culturally responsive approach to academic, clinical, and research education in communication sciences and disorders. To achieve our goal of accessible resources, this special collection reflects a curation of ASHA and other evidence-informed resources for course instructors to access in order to create high-quality, culturally relevant and responsive learning experiences for their students.
A culturally responsive pedagogy is a method of teaching that acknowledges, responds to, and fosters diversity, equity, and inclusion as a central part of any curriculum. Often referred to as Culturally Responsive Teaching & Learning (CRTL), this practice offers barrier-free access to education for all students from all experiences, identities, and backgrounds. This translates to
the instructors’ preparation of student learners, not only as consumers of this knowledge, but as advocates for the individuals they serve. In this effort, culturally responsive teaching and learning has a foundation in experiential learning that incorporates the backgrounds, experiences, and
communicative styles of all participants.
This collection will be expanded over time to include additional and newly published resources and maintained for currency and relevancy. If you would like to suggest a resource to be included in ASHA’s Culturally Responsive Teaching and Learning (CRTL) Special Collection, please complete this form.
